A Surprise Midnight Proposal
On a quiet street in the sleepy English countryside, the church bells struck midnight, marking a new day and a new beginning for Sophie and Matt.
The perfect backdrop to celebrate the past and begin their new future, Sophie and Matt were engaged in Esher, England in the spring of 2016. Even the church bells celebrated Sophie saying, “yes,” by ringing out just as they shared their first kiss as fiancés.
The two met in high school, both attended A&M Consolidated High School and even attended the same church. Sophie vividly recalls telling her mom, “I’m supposed to marry that guy!” even though their timing never worked out. After graduating and going off to college, the two lost touch. Sophie worked for David Gardner’s Jewelers after graduating from college. Matt moved back to town after several years away and asked Sophie to meet up! The two went to La Bodega for Mexican and margaritas and talked for hours. They have been inseparable ever since.
After dating for almost two years, Matt knew he wanted to ask Sophie to marry him when they went to visit her grandmother in England. He also knew Sophie had always dreamed of having a custom DG ring. He came into the store armed with Sophie’s Pinterest boards and some notes and worked closely with David and the DG design team to make sure Sophie’s ring was not only gorgeous, but an incredible surprise! The element of surprise has become one of Sophie’s favorite things about her ring and her proposal.
Matt’s original plan was to propose on their first day in London after a nice dinner and a Shakespearean play. But after hours of travel and 10 hours of walking, they were completely worn out and to top it off Sophie was really struggling with jet lag. So he decided to wait until the next evening. It worked out perfectly as they were able to spend the entire day soaking up the local flavor and went to one of the best restaurants in town for dinner. Around midnight, the couple was returning to her grandmother’s flat and as he had done many times before, Matt told her he wanted to marry her, which she replied that she wanted to marry him too. But this time Matt stopped her in front of a beautiful church built in the
1500’s and got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Sophie answered in shock “are you for real?!” After he promised her he was, she said yes and the church bells struck midnight and rang out during their first kiss as fiancés.
It doesn’t get much sweeter than that. The couple will marry in a small ceremony in College Station, TX in October.
